John Gillard, North Face UTMB Challenge

The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc · 26 August 2011
Raleigh is a youth development charity. It brings young people from different cultural backgrounds, personal circumstances and nationalities together. The charity specialises in offering challenging expeditions to locations around the World. The expeditions engage with the local and scientific communities to ensure everything that is undertaken is really needed.
In 1992 I was lucky enough to be selected to go to Chile for 3 months. At the time we were assisting scientists doing early studies of glacial retreat....or as we call it now....Global Warming.
On my expedition were young people supported by the Prince's Trust. My opportunity of a lifetime in comparison to that being offered to those young people was tiny. Needless to say these people had been through challenging times. However they were doing something about it. They were making a real break from their past. Raleigh and the Prince's Trust was giving them a real chance.
I am taking this opportunity to raise some money for Raleigh to use in partnership with the Prince's Trust. I want to offer one young person an Opportunity of a Lifetime.
On the 26 August I will begin a 100 mile run around Mont Blanc. I will be taking part in The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc. I hope to complete the course in 40 hours. There are no scheduled breaks. No beds. Just lots of checkpoints to keep an eye on my safety and Europe's highest mountain to run around.

Yes it will be a challenge....hopefully not too big a challenge!
Thank You for supporting me, Raleigh and the Prince's Trust. I know that together we will make a difference both for the young person we support, and the other young people they will interact with on expedition.
