At the end of 2016, my wife, Meg became Lady Captain of our Golf Club. In the run up to becoming Lady Captain, Meg began to research various local charities that she could choose as her charity of the year. This charity would be donated money via many events held throughout the year at the Club, as well as any money raised by personal contributions.
Golf is a sport that many people are able to enjoy at all ages. This inspired Meg to look to people who are more physically challenged, and how they are able to push through boundaries to ensure that they are able to participate in any sport.
Meg was introduced, by a friend, to The RDA, Lowlands Farm. Lowlands Farm is a local centre for Riding for the Disabled Association. Having been to the centre and seeing all the work that is put in, as well as the generous individuals who have given their land, property and time to this cause, Meg settled that this would be her charity of choice.
This is an amazing charity that helps a whole spectrum of disabled individuals to ride horses and compete in dressage events. Whether individuals have a physical ailment, suffer from depression or Anxiety, Blind or Deaf, have had a stroke, or are diagnosed as Autistic. There is really no bounds to which individuals this charity can support. Not only does the RDA provide a platform for people to participate in sport, but it also allows for both physical and mental therapy.
So here we are... my aim is to raise money by running in the Great North Run 2017. I have decided to do this for multiple reasons. The main reason: I am a Geordie and as such, this is somewhat of a birth right to run in this half marathon. Latterly, I have previously run twice in the half marathon, the first time when I turned 50, and the second when I was running for my own nominated charity. At the age of 65, I want to run for the third and final time, to raise money for a great cause, and the RDA charity too!
So I implore you, please donate and help me in reaching my target goal, so that we can give to this fantastic charity, where the money will go towards buying a horse for riders to benefit from, both mentally and physically.
I have put the RDA Facebook page below if you are interested in exploring this local charity further:
