Story
In 2017 a routine medical examination revealed that the bad back wasn't a trapped nerve but rather the cancer had returned, this time metastasising to the bones in Karen's back. And so began the four year tussle with terminal cancer.
Not easy years. But neither were they devoid of happiness. Karen possessed an irrepressible spirit, she could find the humour in most situations and tease it out for the merriment of all.
Along the way Karen's first grandchild, dear sweet Isabelle, entered this world. It is quite fair to say that in the short time they shared together a bond was forged that even death cannot diminish. It was so painful to watch this bond grow, each of us knowing what fate had in store. And yet, I have no hesitation is saying that the prospect of her death could not eclipse the pleasure Karen enjoyed with Isabelle.
The last few months were difficult for Karen as the disease advanced. But she enjoyed wonderful support from Macmillan and the local District Nurses - no matter how many times we called upon them they always arrived with a cheery smile and served up first class care. Karen transferred to St Johns Hospice Moggerhanger mid April 2021. I was humbled at the selflessness of the staff there. It was as though they were looking after their sister, such was the tenderness. On three occasions I happened to catch them unawares as I entered the room, and on each occasion they were attending to her with an uncommon gentleness and talking to her with respect and reverence. It was quite marvellous to see such unselfconscious displays of humanity.
The end had been foretold. And Karen passed away on 25th April 2021 with me by her side. Her passing was so gentle that even though I sat with her I can't be entirely sure I recognised the moment the angels spirited her away. It was so, largely because the nursing staff had kept her comfortable and pain free in those last days.
Overwhelmed by the quality of care and the kindness of the staff, I am delighted to help raise funds for St Johns Hospice, in order that others might use the service and enjoy the support given to Karen, myself and our children.
Due to current covid restrictions Karen's funeral on 14/5 is largely limited to close family and there will be no wake. Instead we shall be holding a commemoration of Karen's life in May 2022 - when one hopes it will be possible to celebrate her remarkable life in a manner befitting her memory.
