Story
I have signed up to do the Deloitte Ride for Britain in September 2018, which is a 970 mile ride from Lands’ End to John O'Groats over the course of 9 days averaging 108 miles per day. I will be doing the ride in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity in Memory of Michael Almond who died very suddenly in June 2017 at the age of 27.
On the 28th of June 2017 Michael sadly passed away after being diagnosed with a brain tumour less than three months earlier.
Michael was a fit and seemingly healthy 27 year old, working hard as an accountant and planning his future with the purchase of his first home. It's impossible to understand how someone like Michael, so young could have such a serious illness and Michael’s family were convinced that he would get the treatment needed and get better. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case and in a short space of time Michael lost his fight against the illness.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and, whilst survival has doubled across all cancers, the ten year survival rates for brain tumours has improved little for adults in over 40
years at just 13% (one of the poorest of all cancers). In spite of this, less than 2% of the £500million invested in cancer research in the UK
every year is spent on brain tumours. In an effort to help support The
Brain Tumour Charity achieve their aim of defeating brain tumours, I'm hoping to raise as much money as I can by completing the 970 mile ride across Britain.
I have known Michael’s family for many years and the loss of Michael has been devastating for them all. Please help me to raise as much money as possible to prevent other families suffering the same traumatic ordeal.
