I had to have a Bone Marrow Transplant following diagnosis of a rare blood cancer.
I was fortunate that my sister's blood was a close enough match to my own and she became my donor.
Following bouts of chemotherapy I had my transplant at Leicester Royal Infirmary on 9/11/2011.
Five years 'down the line', I am in full remission and I now only need to go for follow up appointments every 12 months.
I have taken part in the last three (annual) British Transplant Games and based on my results from the last games in Liverpool, I have been selected to represent Great Britain in this year's World Transplant Games.
I will be taking part in the 5000 metres road race and 1500 metres track race. I will also be taking part in table tennis singles and doubles events.
I will be competing in the 50 to 59 age group for each event.
I am raising funds to cover my expenses associated with attending the World Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain. Any surplus funds will go towards the Transplant Sport UK Management Team, including physiotherapists and coaches, who give up their time to support the team.
All athletes taking part from GB are self funded.
I am taking part in this event to raise awareness of the NHS Organ Donor Register and transplantation.
If you have not already done so and if you are eligible, please register onto the NHS Organ Donor Register by calling 0300 123 23 23 or by logging onto www.organdonation.nhs.uk.
You could also save the life of someone with blood cancer simply by donating stem cells from your blood. Donation is very straight forward. Please look at the www.anthonynolan.org website to find out how to sign up to the register.
