Story
This summer I'm going to attempt to run from Lands End to John O Groats, about 1,100 miles. I plan to run around 20 miles a day for 50 days with the aim of completing the challenge on paths and off road.
www.apprenticeadventurer.com for the blog and to follow the journey.
I want to raise as much as possible for the amazing nurses at Marie Curie UK while I'm doing it. They are brilliant and need our help.
I've sorted out support and will pay all the costs myself so every penny will go directly to the charity.
Maybe some of you would like to do more than just donate. Here is your chance.
I'm really hoping some of my good friends as well as Marie Curie supporters are going to help me out by raising a few quid themselves and running a few miles with me. You are welcome to come and join me for a day, 10 miles, 5 miles or even a mile. It's not going to be fast! I have lots of logistics to work out and am determined - so please let me know if you are keen to do a few miles and let's make it happen.
Last summer my mum died in July. She was an inspiring and amazing lady who supported me (with great cake) through my Ironman races. The week before she passed away my pal Jane Wall lost her mum, Pat and the week after another friend Nic Devlin lost her mum, Eileen. They died on consecutive Saturdays which was an incredibly tough time. I want to celebrate the amazing lives they all led and give something back in the process.
This is going to be one epic and massive challenge.
You probably won’t be aware but 30% of the people that Marie Curie nurses care for don’t have cancer; they have terminal illnesses such as MS, Motor Neurone Disease, Heart Failure and Dementia. Marie Curie nurses provide high quality nursing, free of charge, to all patients and families across the UK.
Why I am doing it
Here are the numbers......
Marie Curie Hospice Edinburgh costs £12,939 to run a day and £4.7 million to run per year
£440 pays for someone to stay in a Hospice for 24 hours, so they can receive the hands-on care they need in their final days
£180 pays for a Marie Curie Nurse to look after someone with a terminal illness for a full nine-hour shift
£70 pays for someone with a terminal illness to attend day therapy at our Hospice, benefitting from gentle exercise, an art class and more
