We need to fund the removal of a wall which bisects a unique Roman fort, one of the best preserved in Europe, to enable it to be seen properly in all its majesty for the first time in 300 years.

We are a small charity that seeks to preserve and protect a unique lozenge shaped Roman fort with multiple ramparts near Alston and to research it and the historic landscape around it. We make the area and research available to the public relying solely on donations, grants and fundraising to do so. The fort is the highest in England and has been described as 'possibly the best preserved Roman fort in England'. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund we have commissioned and adopted a professional Research Framework. We seek to follow this to develop knowledge about the fort's history and uses. We also have evidence of pre-historic, medieval and modern use of the landscape around the fort which we intend to research and share with the public. We can only do the research and development of this important site and keep it open for the public to discover and enjoy with help from grant providers and donations from the wider public.
