Story
I don't have an ostomy. To be honest I was not aware of the support, advocacy and education Ostomy Canada Society provides to over 70,000 people who have an ostomy and the circle of care around them. So on October 2, 2021 individuals, family members and friends across Canada will walk, run, roll, slide, hop, dance, sashay, prance, bike, jump, strut, twirl, skip, chill, play cards, or whatever to raise funds and awareness for Ostomy Canada.(Of course it will be done with public health measures in mind).
Why? Why do I want to do more? Can you even imagine being 15 years old in high school, new kids, and they find out you are a bit "different" because you have a bag attached to your body to remove waste due to a disease you had no control over? Think you get teased or looked at differently? Think there might be self esteem or mental health issues? Then he/she hears about a very special camp with others just like him/her. A place where he/she can swim, raft, climb walls, sing around campfires and get a real "camp experience". Medically supported and program driven - because kids want to be kids and want to improve their self esteem, understand how their bodies are changing just like every other 15 year old and be around people who can help them. Kind of neat - it's called Camp Horizon. So help me send kids to camp. The funds which Ostomy Canada generates helps produce community and outreach resources; provides hope; health care information and a connection to specialized nurses (NSWOCs); advocacy work and a variety of programs for those and their families who have an ostomy. Its real....and really important.
Please Step Up and support my efforts.
