Story
W. Bro. John Gravett of Iceni Lodge is planning to carry out a circuit of all the 214 “Wainwright” fells in the Lake District for charity. The fells include most of the highest peaks in England, such as Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw.
He is 65 years old, and despite suffering from Arthritis in his knees, and asthma, is planning to start the challenge on the 1st April 2023, and complete the 214 fells in 428 days, the equivalent of one every 2 days – total distance covered will depend on the routes used, but should be around 700 miles, about the same as Lands End to John O’Groats. Altitude gained is the big part – and will be equivalent to climbing Everest from sea level SIX times. (around 190,000 feet of ups). More realistically, it’s like Everest from Base Camp 15 times.
He is looking for sponsorship for two causes - half the money raised will go to Hertfordshire Masonic Charities, the other half will go to the Lake District Mountain Rescue (which he hopes he won’t need whilst carrying out the challenge).
His initial target would be to raise at least £2,140 for the charities (this would equate to £10 per fell, or just over 1p for every foot of altitude) – Of course,
if we can exceed that amount, that would be wonderful.
