John's story: "I fell ill with a serious chest infection around Christmas 2019, the infection lasted for about 6 weeks. Following that, I started to experience a constant cough, shortness of breath, chest pain and eventually swollen legs. I was diagnosed In March 2020 with severe aortic regurgitation due to a failed aortic valve and damaged mitral valve, which turns out to be a condition I was born with (bicuspid aortic valve) that I knew nothing about previously. I was booked in for open heart surgery on 10 May 2020 and had a replacement mechanical aortic valve and mitral valve repair. This ended up being a great success, however I do have to have medications for the rest of my life to keep my heart healthy. Because of all the amazing support and care I received, I was keen to give back to the NHS, and specifically The Sussex Heart Charity, who do some great work to support the NHS. I've worked really hard to get my level of fitness back and running my first half marathon is a mark of that success.”
