Story
Research from Alzheimer's Society (2019) found that there were over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Sadly, my Mum is included in those 2019 statistics.
Several years ago, I remember clearly that my Mum casually mentioned (without complaining) that she no longer had the ability to smell anything and hadn't for some time. This was something that had been dismissed, medically, as unexplainable and part of getting older. My Mum was barely 65 at the time.
According to recent research, this could well have been an early indicator that structural brain changes were taking place - and that Alzheimer's was coming. Of course, we'll never really know this in my Mum's individual case but, one thing that we have learnt first-hand, is the painful and sad experience of dementia at every stage.
Because of our personal story, I am proud to be taking part in this year's London Marathon to raise much needed funds in support of everyone who is living with dementia and for their families, or for someone who may one day be diagnosed in the future.
Join me, if you can, by supporting this amazing cause.
All donations, no matter how small, go a long way in supporting the fight against dementia.
Many thanks,
John
