CAPT. JOHN C. HEWETT 09/03/1943 – 01/02/2018 AGED 74
John joined the Air Force in 1963 and trained as a Fighter Pilot on the Folland Gnat aircraft. After leaving the Air Force, in 1966 he became a Commercial Airline Pilot and joined British Midland Airways. Other airlines he flew for included Alidair, Dan-Air, Jersey European and Heavylift Air Cargo. His flying career spanned over four decades but he lost his flying licence in 2003 when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer.
Following his recovery from surgery, he worked for CTC in Southampton, (a Commercial Training Airline Academy), for over 12 years training cadets in a 737 simulator.
In October 2014, a chest X-ray confirmed that he had developed secondary tumours in his lungs. John endured over 2½ years of various immunotherapy treatments, but decided in April 2017 that he wanted to stop treatment and let nature take its course.
He enjoyed a wonderful summer with his family feeling in good health but caught a chest infection in mid December. That was the start of his final journey and he was only really poorly for a couple of weeks before passing away at home peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Thursday 1st February.
He leaves behind his wife (Celia), two sons (James and Stephen) and two grand-daughters (Bethany and Ruby).
