Hi there. I'm a HCA on Ward 6 at London Rd Community Hospital here in Derby. Our ward is a complex discharge ward for patients who simply can't just move back home when they have been in hospital. Perhaps they need a package of care putting in place before they return home, or might be moving on to further social care in a residential or nursing home. Either way, setting up these things takes time and patients often find themselves in hospital for longer than they otherwise could be. A vast majority of our patients suffer from dementia. 

Recently I came across the Tovertafel. A downward facing, interactive projection system which has been specifically developed for people with dementia. It helps them in  several ways. Social interaction with others, cognitive skills and coordination skills. It gives them a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which can also be enjoyed by relatives of those affected by this terrible affliction. The approximate cost of this system is in the region of £7000 , which includes installation, staff training and  a Tovertafel buddy, who can advise staff  and provide feedback to Tovertafel for use in developing the system. The Tovertafel was designed in collaboration with the University of Delft, who still actively contribute to it's further development. 

I and my colleagues on Ward 6 feel that the Tovertafel will enhance our patients hospital experience as well as that of their loved ones. Once purchased and installed, I hope other wards at LRCH would be able to share the Tovertafel experience with their patients too.
