Story
We, four walkers with a combined age of 226, are intent on finishing all 100kms across the Yorkshire Dales on June 1st and 2nd - provided all 8 knees hold out for the distance (one has already had an MRI, and the surgery will be later in the Summer!). We will be supported by the indomitable Dinah and the laid-back (see photo) Biz, and may well be the oldest team to cross the finishing line. We were inspired by Mary Nunn, who did the original Oxfam Trail Walk (much hotter and more up and down than the Dales) in Hong Kong in 2011. None of us has ever done such a distance non-stop - so we need your support!
Oxfam are a great organisation, 75 years old, working in 94 countries, aiming to relieve poverty and fight injustice, and reached 15 million people last year. I (Paul) can testify to the quality of their analytical and policy work (at least in health). £142 can provide a water pump for a village in Rwanda, £80 a sewing machine for a women's community group in Liberia to start a tailoring business, £25 a sheep or goat to boost the diet and income for a family in Ethiopia. Only 9% of Oxfam's income goes on admin and office costs.
Why is the team called JJL? David says it stands for Jogey, Jogey La! - which he alleges is Bhutanese for "Let's Go, Let's Go...". Would any Bhutanese speakers care to confirm?
