Hi all, thanks for visiting our page. The Sick Children’s Trust were there when our brother's son Jasper was diagnosed with Oesophageal Atresia with Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula (TOFs) at birth, in October 2018. This is a congenital birth defect affecting ~1 in 3500 UK children a year where the upper part of the oesophagus doesn't connect with the lower oesophagus and stomach.
Jasper was taken to intensive care at the Rosie Hospital, Cambridge, and required corrective surgery at 2 days old. At 10 days old he required another operation for herniated umbilicus. While he was recovering from these surgeries he was further diagnosed with severe Tracheamalacia, a weakened windpipe related to his TOFs. This required yet another specialist surgery, this time at Great Ormond Street.
Through this rollercoaster of events Hannah and Simon were only ever a few minutes away in Chestnut House, run by the Sick Children’s Trust and later at Guildford house when they were at Great Ormond Street. “When there was an emergency we could be there immediately, day to day we could look after him, comfort him and hold him and feel like we were contributing to his recovery and when it had been a tough day on the ward it became our sanctuary. It also allowed Jaspers sisters to get close to him and feel a part of his life. We could feel like a family. They loved sleeping over and visiting Jasper in their pyjamas! Chestnut house also allowed us to meet other parents in a similar situation which also gave us great support”.
As you are most likely aware Stuart, Scott and Sean are all keen runners. So we decided to raise money for this charity we chose to run The Spitfire Scramble. This is a 24 hour race around a 5.75 mile off road loop. As a team of 3 we will run as many laps as possible from 12noon 13 July until 12noon 14 July. Whilst the 3 brothers have all run marathons, this will be unlike anything they have attempted before involving 8 hours of running each, and likely to involve over 50 miles each!
Money raised for the Sick Children’s Trust will help them support families like Simon and Hannah’s who have their lives turned upside down and need help they don’t ever imagine they will need. £30 supports a family for a night, £210 for a week and £900 will support them for a whole month. Without them families would be forced to be in hotels far from the ward and at great expense.
Jasper went home 77 days after he was born and keeps getting stronger, although he will require lifelong follow up to manage his swallow.
