My mum was a wonderful lady, who had time for everyone and anyone, she always welcomed people into her home and made them feel at home all the time. She was the most fantastic Wife, Mother, Nana and friend you would ever meet, and was taken from us far too early.
Back in the summer of 2009 in June, I had just had my birthday and had celebrated with friends and family having a BBQ the night before. My parents always rang up to see if we were in, but this time they just turned up. Straight away it was a very strange atmosphere, and they asked if they could come in and sit down. That's when my mum (typical of her) with no hesitation or beating around the bush told me and my wife that she had breast cancer.
It's a strange feeling being told this about a loved one; anger, fear, confusion and something I am sure a lot of people can relate to is "this doesn't happen to people like us". But the fact is we all know someone or have family who have been affected by the Big C at some point.
Cancer is every bit of the word. It is a cancer and a horrific thing to go through, seeing someone you love and look up to so much fight with all their heart to try and beat this horrid disease is hard to see but also inspirational how courageous someone can be while suffering.
My mum fought so hard to beat it, and my dad did everything he could for her, even taking time off work and becoming her full time carer.
From telling me and my sister on the 20th June 2009, we lost her on Sunday 23rd August 2009. Such a short but painful fight for her. But she fought with everything she had, and still wanted to see everyone and be herself as much as she could.
I have always wanted to push myself and be the best person I can be, and in early 2017 I took up running. To begin with it was just to compete and work as a team to raise money for the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance as my wife's father had passed away in April 2016. I thought I would never get into running, but by the end of 2017, I had racked up over 1,000 miles, 4 half marathons and a new half PB from 1:54:18 to 1:37:18 seconds...I well and truly had the bug!!!!
So, 2018...what shall this bring? I am aiming to run 15 events in just 9 months, to raise awareness of Breast Cancer in memory of my fantastic Mum, Jackie!
So below are my events:
March 25th - Curly's Normanby Hall 10k Adventure Race
