Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. We are running the Great North Run 2016 on September 11th to raise awareness of dementia and funds for Alzheimer's Society.
Here's a few facts you might not know:
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051.
225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes.
1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia.
70 per cent of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems.
There are over 40,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK.
What is dementia?
Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of
brain function. These conditions are all usually progressive and
eventually severe.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed.
Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Dementia is a terminal condition.
Why are we running?
Alzheimer's is a cause close to our hearts and one that we have both been personally affected by. The Society does amazing work all over the country and we are honoured to be representing them in this years Great North Run.
We each have a personal target of £375. Here's an idea of where your hard-earned money could be put to use:
£50 - could fund the chemicals and consumable for one day for a PhD
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thank-you in advance for your kind generosity and support. If you know Amy very well you'll know she despises running, so this presents a real challenge. This was Joey's 'bright idea', and if we don't hit our target it will test our friendship - so dig deep! :)
