Story
Last year I took part in run for respite, raising money for a charity close to my families heart. This year you might be surprised that I am raising money for a different charity, for the Children's Cancer and Leukemia Group, or 'CCLG'.
We are used to our lives being healthy, never more-so than in childhood, but life itself is not consistent, and despite the medical privilege we enjoy in much of the development world, conditions and diseases have not been removed, they are just less known.
Carey, the infant Nephew of my colleague Richard is one such child. Having spent a short time in hospital for brochiolitis his life and that of his family was thrown upside down when he was diagnosed with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukaemia just before Christmas. In a few days his parents, his sister, had to come to terms with a whole new reality.
For children with JMML and so many other childhood cancers, it is charities such as the CCLG who provide the research funding into those conditions, and who support the families of those affected. In short they are a lifeline.
I do not know Carey, nor his family except through my colleague, but I know that the cause is an excellent one those who know my family personally will understand why I feel strongly In this. In truth Carey's reality or one of a myriad like it could become the reality for any family, I think all can understand this.
You can read more about Carey's story here: https://specialnamedfunds.cclg.org.uk/careys-friends
What am I doing to earn your support? Nothing, I hope that you will pledge your support regardless of something that I might do for myself. However it may amuse you to learn that I intend to walk, cycle, basically 'not drive' throughout March, with the aim of covering 105 miles or more. Those who know me well will understand why this isn't as obvious as it seems!
Thank you!
Joe
