Records are both inspirational and aspirational. When the Scottish cyclist, Josh Quigley broke the 7-Day Highest Mileage Record last year it set in motion an aspiration for the team and I to reach further yet again.
This is an ambitious record. Josh has set the bar high and I haven't chosen the easiest route in the easiest country. Our roads are not particularly fast and our weather is not kind. But I wanted to attempt this record in Ireland on a route I know and love.
I began my endurance journey in 2009 in Race Around Ireland. That start line was a fundraiser for Cancer Fund For Children.
My child was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
Once you enter the cancer journey as a parent and a family it truly is a 'long way home.' I may be well along that road but everyday I think of those children and families coming behind me.
Every month around 30 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer in Ireland. I think about all that they will face and the amount of support they will need.
As I've said the route I've chosen for this record isn't the easiest but then cancer doesn't care for easy or kind.
So on this Guinness World Record attempt we'll be raising money and donating every mile to help the Cancer Fund for Children continue to provide therapeutic breaks for children & families at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, Co. Down and help build a much needed second short break centre in Cong, Co.Mayo.
I stayed, with my family, in Daisy Lodge in 2009. It changed my life and set me on a course that I will be eternally grateful for.
Please give what you can. No child or family should be on the cancer journey alone. Those places and spaces that offer respite from cancer change lives. They did mine.
