"Why don't people think about what will happen to the kids before they start a war?" (Lily, July 2017)
With more than 65.6 million people displaced worldwide, of which 21.3 million are refugees, and 45.8 million people in some form of modern slavery, I recently participated in an event to raise awareness of the immense challenges that refugees and victims of slavery are currently facing. Earlier this month, I chose to see for myself what the life of a refugee might feel like and so I "stepped into the shoes" of refugees by taking part in a realistic simluation of being a displaced person.
It was an incredibly impactual event which has inspired me to join an A&O led trek in Jordan in September this year to see and hear firsthand the environment in which refugees live.
In 2016, Allen & Overy selected War Child as its global charity partner for two years. Across our international network of 44 offices in 31 countries, A&O's aim was to raise GBP500,000 to build and fund the Rescue Childhood Centre in the Emirati-Jordanian refguee camp. The firm catapulted past its first target well within the first 12 months of the alliance; and construciton of the Centre will begin in September. Our firm is now extending its aim to raise GBP1M to further help War Child support over 35,000 children who are trying to rebuild their lieves after the devastating effects of war.
Please note that the trek is fully firm & self-funded. Your donation will go directly to War Child - it will not pay for my trek!
