Peru Inca Trail on horseback · 25 April 2016
This June my Mum and I are riding the Inca trail on horseback, through the Andes in Peru. Mum is really keen to fit this challenge in before she turns 70 next year. This is to raise funds for, and awareness of, the equine welfare charity run by the British Horse Society. This charity works tirelessly to improve the welfare of horses in the UK. They train and support a network of specialist horse welfare volunteers which enables them to help over 8000 horses each year, and provide a rapid response to reports of horses in distress.
BHS welfare run a castration programme to reduce indiscriminate breeding and campaign on issues such as ragwort and exotic diseases. They also educate the public on the 5 freedoms of animal welfare in order to help them to provide the best care for their horses that they can. They have recently produced a leaflet of advice regarding the safe use of grazing muzzles to combat equine obesity. They run a helpline which provides a single port of call for the public with any horse welfare queries or concerns.
We will ride for a total of 8 days, 7 of which are the Inca trail treck at altitude through the Andes with a single rest day for that part. The route will be mostly at altitude, rising to 4700 metres at the highest point (over 15,000 feet!). Some nights will be spent camping en route and some with the luxury of proper beds!
We are training hard, hacking out on the hilly North Yorkshire moors and trying to get as fit as we can. In places we may have to lead the ponies and so as part of our training we are walking the hills at home with our dogs too.
If you are able to, please can you make a donation to help us to support this charity's great work in the UK? Thanks to all who have already donated by sponsor form too. All of this fantastic support is really helping us to move forward with our training and will help to keep us going on this once in a lifetime challenge.
Many thanks,
Jody and Pat
