Story
After 6 years of being qualified as midwife and working at the same hospital, I felt the need for a bit of a change and new challenge. I absolutely love being a midwife, and wondered how I could share my passion and enthusiam for midwifery with others. So after thowing around lots of ideas, I finally settled upon getting involved with VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas).
After going through the application and placement matching process, I have been accepted as a volunteer, and have a flight booked out to Malawi on 1st February!
I will be moving to Phalombe for just over a year, where I will be working as a Nurse/Midwife Trainer at the Holy Family College. I will be teaching students in the classroom and on placements in order to try and increase the number of qualified nurses and midwives in the country.
This is a huge adventure and opportunity for me to live a completely different kind of life, whilst being able to use the skills and knowledge, that I am so lucky to have, to help others to access their own opportunites.
Before I go I am raising money to support VSO. They are a charity that send experienced professionals all over the world to aid development and fight against poverty. All contributions go towards sending people like me to the poorest and disadvantaged places in the world.
I've run theh Comrades marathon again this year (54 miles, mostly uphill in 30C heat) to raise money, but am also asking for your genoristy to make just a small donation. So please dig deep now, and donate if you can so that VSO can continue to do the wonderful job that they do.
