Story
Today marks the 1-year anniversary since I decided to prove a point to myself and an impressionable then 9-year-old that his old mum could run.
9 weeks running 3 times a week and quite literally taking us from couch to 5K. Who would have thought a year later I would be regularly running each week, battling old menopausal weak bones and injuries, able to run 10 miles without stopping.
So, on this anniversary, which is also Bowel Cancer Awareness
month, I am ready to start my fundraising to run my first half marathon in the Great North Run on Sunday September 12th running on behalf of Bowel Cancer UK.
My reason for running? This is all for my best friend Steph.
She won’t want me to make this all about her, but it is and I’m not even sorry 😊 In 2019 she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and had both her and her families lives turned upside down. The last few years have been a constant grueling schedule of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and thankfully an operation to remove the tumour (even during Covid).
However, I have learnt through her that the battle is never quite over and even when positive news comes, the joy does not always follow.
As a helpless bystander I have often struggled with how I can help. So, when you cant send any more cards, cookies or cakes, why not run a half marathon.
Stephanie Lawson. You’re my bloody hero and I’d walk to the
end of the earth if I knew it would make you better. But let’s start at 13.1 miles yeah? I love you.
