Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This will be my first half marathon, and it's a hilly one! To be honest, I'd do it just for the sake of a morning's running in the Lake District, but raising money for the Alzheimer's Society will give me that bit of extra incentive to keep up my training during the cold, wet, and dark winter months. My nana has Alzheimer's disease, and it is unspeakably cruel for both sufferers and their families. People begin to lose their own identity when they suffer from dementia, as well a losing touch with the identities of those they've loved and who love them. So, every time I see my nana, Hilda Martha Hewiit nee Hodgson, I remind myself that she is a farmer's daughter from Kirkbride who lost her dad when she was only thirteen; she drove ambulances as a member of the Royal Auxiliary Service during the Second World War; has been a bus conductor; a bakery assistant; a wife; a widow; carer to an entire generation of her own family; an unbelievable mother, and an incredibly devoted nana. She'll never play the same role in the lives of her great grandchildren that she did in mine and my brother's, but her face lights up at the sight of them anyway. She remembers less and less of this, so it's important that someone does.
