Story
Thanks for visiting my Just Giving page. I am part of a group of runners from Deeside who are running the Balmoral 10k to raise awareness of the charity Lifeblood:The Thrombosis Charity. Please read below to find out why I’ll be dragging myself around this course (not to mention this mammoth hill in the middle!!) and why every donation will be very much appreciated.
Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity is a relatively unknown charity amongst the general public. Unfortunately it is only people who have been affected by life threatening or fatal thrombosis and blood clots that realise that the charity exists and honour the tireless work that goes into raising awareness of condition that could affect both you and I without warning.
Thrombosis is completely in-discriminatory and could affect both old and young people alike – a common misconception is that deep vein thrombosis (which often leads to potentially fatal blood clots) affects elderly people, women in particular. This is not the case.
I too was one of these people who overlooked the severity of DVT and thrombosis before it was the cause of a young, fit and healthy, 42 year old man's death – Rob James.
Rob was my mum’s fiancé and a big part in our family until his untimely death in 2013. A minor injury, a snapped achillies tendon, caused during touch-rugby would turn out to be fatal because of symptoms that were missed. All of which were typical of a blood clot forming and because it was left untreated, proved to be fatal.
The initial injury that Rob sustained happens to people everyday, all over the country, and should have been something that a fit, healthy man should bounce back from, like millions of others do every year.
It was a stroke of bad luck that led to Rob’s death and a lack of awareness about what his symptoms could be pointing towards led to it being undetected until it was too late. This is why every donation towards this charity will help to prevent this affecting another family!
It is only when you are faced with the aftermath of someone suffering from a deep vein thrombosis or clot that you come to realise that awareness of these conditions is paramount to saving lives…and this is why a group of runners from Aboyne and the surrounding Deeside area will be taking part in the Run Balmoral 10k on 26th April.
So, please donate anything that you can and help us to raise awareness of this condition. Let’s stop this affecting another young life!
