Story

Hi,

I am running the London Landmarks Half Marathon, followed just 3 weeks later by the full London Marathon for Lilly, my absolute favourite 11 year old, who has had her life flipped upside down by Type 1 Diabetes. Lilly is my reason for running and her Mum, Kelly - one of my good friends, is my motivation. We are running the half together and hope to raise as much as we can for Diabetes UK.

At the small age of just 8, in Feb 2020, Lilly started experiencing symptoms of Type 1, these were The 4 T’s

  •  Thirst (extreme)
  • Tiredness
  • Thin (losing unexplained weight)
  • Toilet (urinating frequently at all hours).

Lils was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, and the battle began. Diabetes robs Lilly of freedoms that we all take advantage of, she has to calculate every carb she eats and counteract it with insulin, battle highs and lows when she should be sleeping, have devices attached to her body and phone alarms go off relentlessly.Lilly’s story is sadly not unique, for those with Type 1 this is reality every day.

We are however very fortunate that advances in technology have been able to fund research that has developed devices that Lilly uses, such as the Dexcom and Omnipod. These devices means she does not need to inject in to her tummy and can read her BM on her phone or watch for convenience.

I am fundraising for Diabetes UK, to help fund vital research to make everyone with Type 1 but especially our Lils life significantly easier, and who knows, maybe one day Diabetes free 🤞🏼
