Following the sad passing of our Brother Danny Crawley, we would like to raise donations for a fantastic local charity Stockport Mind. If you were thinking of sending flowers for the funeral, please donate the money instead, we will have a collection box at the service or you can donate here. Even if you are not attending his funeral or did not know Danny, we would love for you to make a donation however small.
Stockport Mind is an independent adult mental health charity that offers friendly, accessible support and information to promote well-being in the local community. They strive to work towards a society where people who experience mental distress are supported in their recovery, empowered to reach their full potential, and they and their family/carers are free from the stigma and discrimination.
Danny’s story told by his sisters Jo and Sue.
When Danny was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck starving him of oxygen for long enough to cause damage and stopping his brain from developing at a normal rate, resulting in him always being a child even in adulthood. There was no help or recognition at this time, so we really did not understand that Danny had mental distress and just always thought he was naughty and a joker.
He got in trouble with the police, struggled to learn at school and was just labelled as cheeky or trouble. It was only in later life when Danny had children and then separated from his partner that the extent of what he had been living with came to light. Danny was stopped from seeing his children, who he loved so much, and this caused him to have a complete mental breakdown. He was self-harming, suffering from paranoia and depression, also he was homeless for a time and in the end, we had to admit him to hospital for help. Once we understood Danny’s condition, we were able to support him more and help him cope with day to day life.
Anyone that knew Danny will know him for always trying to make them laugh, even at the saddest of times, this was his coping mechanism to stop him feeling the way he really did and to cover up the fact that he was suffering with mental illness.
Danny’s love of music was great as this was always something for him to focus on and give him an interest, he was so happy when vinyl made a come-back and we bought him a record player and over the last couple of years he got a fantastic record collection.
We have chosen this charity as they are there to help and support people like Danny, to stop the stigma of all mental distress, whatever the cause and they cannot do it without our donations. Depression and mental illness are a silent killer because you cannot see it, people don’t think it is real.
Stockport Mind have recently had their funding reduced dramatically so every single penny that they received now counts. Please help if you can.
Share this post and please help small non-profit local charities make a difference we all need someone to trust and talk to. Please help the thousands of people like Danny who’s condition has been swept under the carpet, help them have the help they deserve.
