We fund life-changing and life-saving work to support cancer patients at The Christie

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I completed the Manchester to Blackpool 60 mile bike ride in 2014 with a team of 23 riders in between chemo 4 and 5 (!) as I was having treatment for secondary breast cancer. I completed the bike ride again in 2015 with Jo C, Jeff and Alan.  I'm currently in remission and my running, cycling and cross fit partner Jo C has come up with the idea of numerous challenges throughout 2016.  Jo C has already started this off by collecting donations on New Years Eve.  We are doing these events for The Christie but for specific funded work in a lab developing patient derived models from patients at The Christie with metastatic breast cancer to investigate modes of resistance and breast cancer stem cells to develop new treatments.  This is such important work and something that could help many secondary breast cancer patients.  Personally, I am also doing this for my wonderful Oncologist Dr Greg Wilson & his team who keep me going and able to do these challenges!  A simple thank you would never be enough.

This is a list of the challenges.  Some are to still to be confirmed...

20 February - Diggle to Didsbury 20 miles COMPLETED                                                                  12 March - Howarths Hobble - 32 mile (Jo C entered this) COMPLETED                                                                         18 March - Saddleworth Ladies night Dobcross Band Club COMPLETED                                                                        15 April - Jo's 25th (I was a child bride!) Wedding Anniversary fund raiser COMPLETED

16 April - a group of local cricketers will be cycling 80 miles between all of the clubs in our new cricket league. We intend to raise 1/3 of the money for our junior boys and new junior ladies cricket teams, 1/3 for a charity called POINT in Oldham and 1/3 for The two Jo's big challenge for The Christie. COMPLETED                                                                      24 April - Oldham Triathlon (Bren - swimming & Jeff run and cycle tri team & Jo C competing in the whole event) COMPLETED

May - Anne & Gisela - 2 parish priests in Didsbury & Withington, will be walking (~300 miles!) from their parishes to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) via the Pennine Way & St. Cuthbert's Way. They leave Manchester on 2nd or 3rd May to walk to Edale, then follow the Pennine Way to Kirk Yetholm - arriving at Kirk Yetholm on the 25th May. Then walking from there to Holy Island, arriving on the 30th May - half of their fundraising will be given to this specific fund. COMPLETED!

15 May - Oldham 7K run (Jo, Jo, Jane, Stacey & Kate) COMPLETED!

10 July - Manchester - Blackpool Bike Ride - 60 miles COMPLETED!

November - Curry night & Jeffs surprise 50th Birthday - COMPLETED!

I have treatment every 3 weeks for secondary breast cancer and scans every 3 months. This will continue for life. Secondary breast cancer is incurable but treatable. I am lucky that I have access to some great drugs that hopefully will keep me in a good remission for the near future.

In the UK alone 1000 people die EVERY MONTH of secondary breast cancer. 12000 lives lost every year leaving devastated families. Worldwide the figure is 1430 people die EVERY DAY from secondary breast cancer. This is tragic... Something must be done.

With the opening of the new Manchester Cancer Research Centre it is hoped that they will create new more effective drugs and even look for a cure. In the meantime, please support this hugely worthwhile cause.

We will be doing these events not just for The Christie but for all the amazing breast cancer ladies and men we have met through various social media. Many, like me live with secondary breast cancer and many have also died, like my friends, too many to name but specifically  Debbie, Isy & Carolyn.  These events will be in memory of them all.
