Story

Our story

In the summer of 2022, we found out the very happy news that we were expecting a baby. Although this came as a bit of a surprise, we were over the moon. Our excitement grew as we drew closer to the 20-week scan with the anticipation that we would get to see our beautiful baby on the screen again.

Our appointment came around soon enough and before we knew it, we were looking up at the screen in awe of the tiny human being we had created. All of a sudden, we were told 4 words which no parent ever wants to hear: “I have some concerns”. As the sonographer called for the consultant, we knew there was something seriously wrong.

We were informed there had been a bleed that had stopped our baby’s brain from developing normally. Our consultant was quick to reassure us that it wasn’t anything we had done, but nothing could change the heartbreak and devastation that we felt. The next week was a blur of subsequent scans, blood tests and appointments. It was at this point we found out we were having a girl and we chose to name her Matilda <3

I was admitted to hospital four days later for an induced labour and gave birth to Matilda at 16:11 on the 5th of November 2022 in the ‘Forget-Me-Not’ suite. She was born at 21 weeks and 2 days and although both consultants had said she would be asleep when she was born, she defied all expectations and was alive. We had precious time together where we could hold her, cuddle her, and listen to her gentle heartbeat. Matilda passed away peacefully in Tom’s arms 95 minutes later. We will be forever grateful for that small window of time and not a day goes by where we don’t go back and relive those special moments.

The name Matilda means ‘might, strength and battle’ which feels so fitting for our daughter. Matilda was the most beautiful baby we had ever seen, with her perfect face and tiny little nose. She had long limbs and long little fingers – just like her mama. The love we felt for her was unlike any feeling we had ever felt before and although she is no longer physically here with us, the love we have for her continues to evolve and will be with us forever.

The Challenge

As we passed Matilda’s 6-month anniversary in May, we felt the need to do something positive and began searching for a challenge. Although Tom and I enjoy walking, climbing Snowdon in the dark is no mean feat! We are doing it in memory of Matilda, to make her proud, and to ensure other bereaved parents get the support they deserve.

Over the past 6 months the amount of love and support we have received from family, friends and even strangers has been overwhelming. We have been lucky enough to have been supported by various organisations, one of which is Sands. Although nothing can take the pain of our loss away, having other bereaved parents to talk to has been so helpful.

We would be hugely grateful if you were able to sponsor us, so that with your help we can give back to this fantastic cause.

With love,

Joanna & Tom xxx
