Story
My Mum has recently been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus.
NPH (normal pressure hydrocephalus) is an excessive build-up of fluid in the head. Diagnosis can be difficult as some of the symptoms are similar to other disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease which come on. Many cases go unrecognised and are never treated.
The three main symptoms are mobility problems, forgetfulness / confusion (dementia) and urinary incontinence. With difficulty responding to questions another common symptom.
Thankfully, we managed to get a diagnosis earlier this year and she is now awaiting treatment which involves brain surgery. Treatment can halt memory loss, improve symptoms and even reverse the condition so we feel lucky to have received a diagnosis. But I want to raise awareness in the hope of other families recognising the symptoms, because if untreated, hydrocephalus could be fatal.
So... I'm supporting Shine by taking on the Virtual London Marathon 2022!
