Thank you for visiting my page!
I am honoured to be joining Team Sarcoma to run the 2019 Virgin London Marathon in aid of Sarcoma UK.
As most of you will know, Ben received a late diagnosis of Sarcoma (Radiation-induced) in February 2018. This was a rare and unlucky consequence of radiotherapy given 11 years previously to treat a completely different cancer.
Luckily for us, given Ben's poor initial prognosis, two brilliant teams of surgeons from the Royal Brompton and Royal Marsden Hospitals were eventually able to operate on him. They successfully removed a large tumour from his chest. Ben spent a month in hospital recovering from this radical surgery which has resulted in some loss of use of his left arm. He has since undergone four cycles of gruelling chemotherapy under the care of the Royal Marsden Hospital.
Sarcomas are a diverse group of cancers which grow in bone (usually presenting in teenagers and young adults), and “soft tissue” (e.g. muscles, nerves, blood vessels, fatty tissue). Approximately 15 people are diagnosed with Sarcoma each day in the UK. A great deal more research is needed to understand them and improve treatments.
Ben has undergone the equivalent of at least two marathons in 2018. The least I can do is undertake one in order to raise as much money as possible for Sarcoma UK. This will help raise awareness of the condition both within the medical profession and among the general public and contribute to research and treatment.
Every £1 will spur me along the roads! Please help us raise lots of money!
Thank you so much!
