Story
I met Kaz last summer at her boyfriend's pizza party - she was bubbly and fun and we hit it off straightaway. Less than 6 months later she was in the midst of surgery, chemo and radiotherapy for breast cancer.
I've always enjoyed walking and hatched a crazy plan to give her a focus to get her through her difficult time: to walk the newest national path - the 97 mile St Oswald's Way in Northumberland - from 7th to 13th August and we will add an extra three miles to make it a round 100 miles. Carrying our camping gear, Kaz's chatty cheeky manner has got us free camping pitches and a free night in a National Trust bunkhouse - I'm really looking forward to that bed!
Since that time, my brother-in-law has recovered (fingers crossed) from prostate cancer and is awaiting treatment for skin cancer. Breast cancer and prostate cancers are now epidemics in the Western World. Whether it's diet, our environment, the way we deal with stress or mobile phone use that's causing the increase - well, read Anticancer - A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber and make your own mind up.
Kaz has been advised not to do the walk. She's been told it is too soon after her treatment. She's aiming to do at least half but I am sure her determination will make her do the full 100 with me - with my dodgy hip, she may have to piggy back me to the finish!
