My nephew Alfie was born unexpectedly early in October 2020, at just 26 weeks.
He weighed 2lb 6oz and fit into the palm of his Dad’s hand.
His very early arrival was a shock to everyone, but the team at The John Radcliffe hospital took extra special care of him for 101 days, until he could go home and meet the rest of his family, including his big brother.
His stay was turbulent and it was a rough ride for my sister and brother in law (Alfies' Mum and Dad).
That’s where SSNAP came in. Their team made daily rounds to check in on them, and Alfie’s progress.
They provided snacks, drinks, meal vouchers, gifts for Alfie, and most importantly a listening ear.
They are also responsible for arranging one to one sessions with psychologists to help parents process their experience.
They are an incredible team who not only look after the babies on the unit and their parents, they look after the nurses and doctors who work tirelessly to care for sick and premature babies.
Along with funding life saving machinery and equipment on the neonatal unit, they also use funds to provide comfy chairs, new pillows and privacy screens which are vitally important to help parents bond with their babies.
Their help and support makes the most difficult time of a parents life just that bit easier, and donations are so vital to their continued efforts.
