We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

IF ONLY… brain tumour research could be funded in the same way as leukaemia and other cancers.....

We have set up this page in memory of Jim, a husband, father and grandad.

This time last year Jim was enjoying his retirement, golfing, gardening and travelling the world with Christine. Spending time with daughters Sarah & Louise, son-in laws Steve and James and grandchildren Ashley, Ben, Liam and Darcey.

Jim had a slight fall and hurt his back, this went on for a few weeks without improving. He then started shaking and tapping and became quite distant. Over the next 3 months we took Jim to see numerous Doctors who said he was stressed and it was all in his mind. We did see a neurologist who ruled out Parkinsons.

After Christmas we requested an appointment with the Neurologist who could see Jim's condition had become worse. An emergency head scan revealed Hydrocephalus and a growth in the pineal gland deep in the brain.

We were so relieved as at last there was a reason for his condition. He was admitted to hospital had an operation to fit a shunt to drain the fluid away from the brain.

Unfortunately the biopsy on the growth showed a malignant tumour in the pineal gland which required radiotherapy. At this time we were all hopeful for a full recovery. Between radiotherapy sessions Jim then had shingles which caused him such a lot of pain and he had to be admitted to a local hospital for pain relief. In spite of the best possible care provided by Danetre Hospital Jim passed away on the 9th August 2012. Losing Jim was devastating for us all, we are grateful that we were able to spend his last few days with him, we hope that he could hear us reminising about all the good times we have spent together.

Jim's funeral is on 22nd August and we request donations instead of flowers to help in the research of Brain Cancer.

We plan to continue fundraising in Jim's memory and greatly appreciate your support in helping us achieve this.

Thank you.

Christine, Sarah, Louise and family

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
