Event: Nottingham University Hospitals Charity - Fire Walk, on 4 November 2010

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Any money raised will be sent to Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and put towards the Childrens Hospital there.  It is a truly amazing and fantastic hospital with such wonderful, dedicated and hard working staff...from the Professors, Doctors, Nurses and Play Specialists to the Cleaners, who do a tremendous job keeping everything ship shape and hygenically clean.

I am doing the "Fire Walk" as a way of saying thank you to the medical team who helped "mend" Laurence when he was diagnosed as having a rare variant of a Wilms Tumour (Kidney cancer that affects Preschool children.)  The "mass" was discovered at a routine bladder scan on 7th September 2009 and after a CT Scan and Biopsy of the tumour at Queens Medical Centre- the results of both coming back as 'inconclusive' - the decision was taken to remove the tumour, not an easy task as there was a risk that the cells could "spill" and trigger a tumour elsewhere.  On 2nd October 2009, Laurence was in surgery for 3½ hours and, unfortunately, had to have his right kidney removed too as the tumour was wrapped around it.  Thanks to the quick actions of the medical team, Laurence, although having had a Hickman Line (or Central Line) put in ready for chemotherapy, didn't need any chemotherapy.  He has quarterly Chest X-Rays and Stomach scans and these appointments have just been stretched to 4-monthly.

The medical team have always treated Laurence with such respect, they saw a little boy with an illness, not just an ill little boy among a long line of sick children and it is something we will always be thankful for.  With their tact and respect, Laurence isn't scared of attending hospital for his appointments, in fact he looks forward to seeing the Professor!

Thank you for taking the time to visit this page, all donations, whether large or small are very, very, VERY gratefully received - both by me and of course, by the hospital :-)
