A story from my wife, Kirsty

We all know how Diabetes hits peoples lives. My mum suffered from Type 1, and in those days when she was diagnosed, it was pig insulin twice a day. Her life was timed around her meals, and she had to watch what she eat constantly. This really had an impact especially when going out. Her biggest fear  through it all was to loose a limb to the disease. This never happened, as we sadly lost her in 1993.

Later in the 90's my sister was diagnosed with Type 1. We were amazed how things had changed! Electronic blood sugar meters and insulin pens instead of syringes and advances in insulin production. My sister lives her life normally, injecting before she eats, whenever she needs, altering her dosage depending on what she is going to eat. She has all the freedom of those free of the disease - and no more pig insulin!

My father-in-law also has diabetes as did my grandpa, Type 2, regulating their blood sugar by diet and tablets. As we talk about Diabetes, the more people we are finding are living with the disease.

This is only possible due to the constant research Diabetes Uk does. They provide hope to all those coping with the day to day challenges that diabetes throws at them. Diabetes affects the whole body, from the eyes, skin, feet to whole limbs. To see how far the treatment of diabetes has moved on in the last 20 years, makes me wonder what amazing advances can happen in the next- be part of it!
