Story
During my placement in Malawi I will be working with one of Tearfund's partners, Ministry of Hope (MOH), based in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe.
The work of MOH is incredible; founded in April 1999 they have set up 6 feeding centres where they provide a meal for orphaned children 6 days a week. They also have a mobile medical clinic which reaches communities with very limited access to medical care, 2 crisis nurseries - one in the capital, Lilongwe, and another in the city of Mzuzu - these are set up to provide care for orphaned infants while they wait to be placed with relatives or adoptive families. Educational scholarships are provided as there is no free education to children past the age of 15, There is a pre-school program for under 5's.
My main roles will involve working with the children teaching English, bible stories and basic maths, but also supporting the MOH staff where we are most needed in the various areas of service.
The cost of the placement is £2950 this amount covers pre-departure training, insurance, debrief event after returning from placement, a medical package, Tearfund staff time and in-country travel, accommodation and food.
I will also set up a seperate fund to cover the cost of my flights, vaccinations and visa, of which the total is currently estimated at £1500.
