Love Luton Half Marathon · 28 October 2018
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Having said I would never do a Half Marathon here I am having signed up for one. As you may know I have been doing various triathlons over the last 4 years and I don't often ask for sponsorship as it has been a personal journey.
This Half Marathon is a bit different. Any time I have taken on a challenge that is well and truly beyond my wildest dreams/nightmares I know that having sponsorship has helped me through it.
Thankfully I am not doing it alone I am joined by Sam (Demon Dory) , Simon ('Ironman’) and Michael (Hardcore Hayler)!
In the Swim bike Run world in Luton we are probably the most 'Famous Four' in our town when it comes to Crazy. If we aren't swimming in Boxend Lake with what we call 'Water Triffids' otherwise known to normal people as rather large weeds, we are either running the streets or biking and usually compteting in a fair few crazy races throughout the year.
I met Sam at a fancy dress Parkrun in Luton and suffice to say I finally met my crazy match, she'd already swam the Serpentine last year & I persuaded her to do 2 triathlons this year, so we decided that we needed to become 13.1 miles of awsomness and turn ourselves into half marathon queens! To do this we need the help of the boys, Simon & Michael to get us through those 13.1 miles. The fellas are quite used to running these distances! Especially Router the Ironman! (who is bloody awesome in every way!)
We all have our links with the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and we decided that if we are going to run 13.1 miles in our hometown then we should try and raise some money for something our hometown needs and a charitable fund we believe could make a difference. Is there anything cooler than running for a Helipad? No..... We didnt think so. So here we are.... All four of us in in the middle of half marathon training which many of you may have seen us blogging away on instagram with our fartlek practice on the track (which Mo Farah makes look easy!........We can assure you it isn’t ) and our hill practice in Silsoe! We have 7 miles of Hills in the luton Hoo to get through before we even hit the streets of Luton during this half marathon!
So...............................
Simon - After his dad was acutely unwell 5 years ago and had multiple HDU & ITU hospital admissions at the L&D over the course of that year, he wanted to give something back to back to the L&D. He has chosen to support the Helipad Appeal!
Sam - She has worked in the High Dependency Unit for 9 years at the L&D and a ward nurse there before this. If she's gonna run 13.1 miles she's going to do it for something she believes in to get her through it! She has also demonstrated her insanity to its best by not only deciding to run half a marathon in October but to take on the mass Serpentine Swim again this September which she said she would never do again! .... (You all need to cough up double the amount cash for Sam)! She is an absolute legend!
Michael - His son was born at the L&D at 26 weeks. Whilst he continues to be a keen fundraiser & supporter for the NICU department he thought it sounded cool to run for a helipad and support the girls getting them to the finish line...... He completed the Love Luton half marathon last year! So he knows what he's doing!
Jess - After a bike accident in the past resulting in a major operation which involved skin grafting & Trauma Orthopaedic Surgery I wanted to give something back to the NHS so here I am running for the helipad appeal!
Between the four of us we make a pretty good team and hope to raise a decent amount of money
We are lucky to have a designated support crew en-route mainly involving nurse's with fuel (Snickers bars and Lucozade sport) on mile 7 as we come out of the ‘Hills’ in the Luton Hoo! We still have 6.1 miles to go after this so anyone willing to stand on various mileage posts around Luton with Jelly Babies & chocolate & carbs feel free :-)
