Dartmoor Winter Traverse · 25 February 2023

Councillor Sue Dann has chosen two charities to support; Trevi and Gifted Women.

Story

The Winter Traverse is not your everyday run or walk on Dartmoor; it is definite step up from the Dartmoor in a Day challenge held in September and uses a separate line. Weather is always a factor on Dartmoor but even more so in February; there is also the small number of daylight hours to consider and difficult terrain underfoot. The route is mainly across wild areas of open moor without any way markings.

The route is approximately 50 km (30 miles) and almost entirely off road. The 50 km should not be underestimated!

Trevi is a nationally award-winning women's charity based in Plymouth. They provide safe and nurturing spaces for women and their families to heal, grow and thrive. Trevis vision is for a society where all women in recovery can access good quality, psychologically informed, gender-based interventions without apology.

In the 29 years that Trevi has been operating, the charity has helped transform the lives of thousands of women and their children. From rehab and health to housing and employment, Trevi helps any woman in recovery move from 'surviving' to 'thriving'.

Trevi runs three centres:

1.    Jasmine Mothers Recovery the only residential rehab in the UK where mothers can take their children through rehab. 98% of women successfully detox and almost 8 out of 10 children get to stay with their mother.

2.    The Sunflower Womens Centre - providing a safe hub for connection and hope. Every year, Sunflower supports and empowers more than 700 local women, many with complex needs and experience of trauma and abuse. 90% of women supported by Sunflower say it has been a lifeline, with 88% able to move forward in life.

3.    Daffodil Family Centre a residential parenting assessment centre, offering 12-week placements, placing the child at the centre of its work with a trauma informed approach.

Trevi also runs the delivery of a women-only drop-in service for women who are sexually exploited and / or prostituted, supported by a number of other third sector agencies in Plymouth.

Gifted Women is a Plymouth based charity running life changing employability programmes for women experiencing multiple disadvantage, including substance misuse, homelessness, domestic abuse, removal of children into care and contact with the criminal justice system.

Gift Women provide an innovative group work programme for women, focusing on all aspects of employability including confidence building, life skills and wellbeing. They also partner with local employers to offer women meaningful work experience placements, enabling them to put what their learning into practice and gain valuable insight into the world of work. Work placements are in a range of settings and can be arranged to align with women's hopes for their future.

Gift Women work with women who have never had the opportunity to gain employment before, due to lack of support, lack of education and qualifications, and other challenges that work together to keep women from reaching their potential.

On completion of the Gifted Women programme, the aim is for women to have more self worth and self belief, be engaged in employment, training or further education, and supported with a personalised plan for their next steps.
