Story
In January 2015 I am going to Abrobiano in Ghana with International Citizen Service (ICS). ICS is a scheme run by the Department for International Development to bring young people together to fight poverty in some of the world's poorest communities. I'll be working alongside UK and Ghanaian volunteers for 10 weeks whilst living with a host family.
Abrobiano is a small rural fishing village not far from Cape Coast, with basic amenities, and many residents live on less than $1 a day. A recent community survey carried out revealed widespread concern over a number of health related issues including HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health and malaria. Education, healthcare and family planning are seen as central to the positive development of the community. Previous teams of volunteers have been focusing on helping young people of all ages access education opportunities, particularly for girls and on issues of health. Each group of volunteers work builds on from the work and planning of the previous group and it is likely that my placement will focus on livelihoods. This means that I will be working with people in the community to help improve their skills and employability.
I am going to Ghana with Lattitude Global Volunteering, one of the development charities that delivers ICS. I have a fundraising target of £800 which is put back into the scheme to help others benefit from this development volunteer experience and your donations will help ensure that these projects continue.
