We support young people around the world to confront the planet's most urgent crises

Story

Updated on Nov 16th 2012 at 9:04 PM from the JustGiving API

Thank you so much for your support! It is really appreciated. I've got a special car boot sale coming up in a little over a week which will hopefully get me a little closer to the target. There will be some pretty awesome treasures to rummage through at my stall, so join me up at Brighton racecourse on the 25th November if you can! Alternatively, you can come and get some Krispy Kreme doughnuts from me during the January sales in Bath! Look out for me on Union street next to the Disney store on the 10th Jan and grab a quick treat :)

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am going on a 10 week expedition to Karnataka in India in Spring 2013. Alongside people from the local community and other Raleigh volunteers, I will be participating in sustainable community and environmental projects such as building sanitation facilities, bio-gas units, tribal houses and community centres. This work will make a genuine difference to the lives of those in remote areas of India, and helps to improve such issues as income generation, wildlife conservation, education, substandard living conditions and community participation.

The volunteer work I will be doing will also have a positive impact on the surrounding villages. For example, by building things like eco-sanitation toilets, the wider community can benefit from improved health and a reduction in the cases of deadly diseases spread through dirty water and unsanitary conditions. It is estimated that almost 3/4 of the population do not have access to sanitation facilities. This shocking statistic is just one of the core issues which Raleigh International and its volunteer's seek to change through its expeditions. By building schools, training and community centres, it is also possible to educate locals within the villages and therefore attempt to make a lasting change in the cycle of poverty.

For many communities the basic human needs of food and shelter are not met and extreme poverty is the norm. I am therefore extremely thankful to have been given the opportunity to volunteer with such a fantastic charity, and to get out there and help to directly tackle these core issues.

I am expected to raise at least £800 pre-departure, so any donation however large or small will make a real difference. In addition to this JustGiving page, I will be raising money through a very cool raffle, which will actually have some good prizes I promise, as well as a 10 mile sponsored walk along the Sussex coast (in the freezing cold British winter)! I aim to update this page with the details of these events, so keep checking back if you want to stay up to date with the different ways you can help.

If you have any questions or wish to know more about what I will be doing on my trip, or want to know more about Raleigh International, please feel free to email me: jennywild@gmail.com

Thank you so much in advance for any donation you can make :)
