Story
My name is Jennifer and I am so lucky to be partnered with Hearing Dog Lenny. I am profoundly deaf in right ear and severely deaf in left ear, I use a combination of speech and BSL. Lenny helps alert me to sounds around the home that would go unnoticed if he was not here.
Alarm clock - I now get up at same time everyday. Lenny alerts me to doorbell noise and telephone ringing. I'm training Lenny to alert me to mobile text messages, he loves telling me that Alexa is sounding her alarm. When I need to remember something Lenny lets me know cooker timer is making noise. Smoke alarm, emergency call for husband Keith to come help me get up if muscles get weak or if had a fall. Lenny makes sure I go out every day to exercise and meet people. This clever assistant dog has changed my life in so many ways for better, improving my health and giving me back independence I once had lost. Lenny has helped build up my very low confidence and helps me to interact / communicate / connect with people. With Lenny by my side I feel safer, happier and not on the outside of things any more, he is my shadow and one of my best friends. Every one loves seeing Lenny, this spaniels enthusiasm for loving life is contagious , he spreads joy, smiles , laughter where ever we go. I am truly thankful for having the gift of a Hearing Dog .
My life now has meaning, direction, plans, self esteem and confidence. Thanks to Lenny I now love myself for who I am and have accepted deafness is a part of me which is okay. My husband is also happier and healthier for all the extra walks Lenny gives him.
We are raising money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People by walking The Great British Dog Walk and came up with the idea of Brighton to Broadstairs coastal adventure. We thought it would be a challenge to cover more areas of the coast we haven't done before. For us its safer during coronavirus times to walk coastal trails, easier traveling to next point each day from home - there will always be help if we need it. I have a back condition / several other health issues, it will be an effort but we hope to succeed. Enjoying views and taking as many rests as needed.
Every Penny I raise will help more life-changing pup's-in-training who will one day transform a deaf persons life. Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated. The charity receives no central government funding and it costs £25,000 to fully train an accredited hearing dog, so The Great British Dog Walk is a great way to raise funds to train more dogs.
Please if you are able to sponsor Lennys Pawsome Adventure , we would be very grateful for your support. Any donation, however large or small, will really help. Thank you.
