In September 2020, I was induced four weeks early with our first son, James due to slow growth. He was born 36+3 weighing 5lbs and was taken straight to NICU. He spent 12 days there between ICU and Special Care. We were lucky enough to be offered a room on ward so we could pop along and see him at any time.
In November 2022, I was induced four weeks early again with our second son, Harris due to slow growth. He was born 36+2 weighing 4lbs 13oz. This time we got a couple of hours with him before being taken to NICU. He spent 9 days there between ICU and Special Care.
On both occasions the staff, like all hospital staff went above and beyond to look after our boys. They kept us updated daily on how they were doing, encouraged us to get involved with feeding and changing when appropriate. When staying on ward we were both left meals and when we were not in hospital, were updated on their vCreate Service.
In December 2022, when Harris was three weeks old he was admitted to RACH. He was very sleepy, pale, not interested in feeding and just wasnt himself. After seeing the nurse and doctor in Peterhead we were told to go to RACH where he was seen by several doctors. Several tests were carried out including a lumbar puncture. This revealed that Harris had Viral Meningitis. He was in for four days and I was allowed to stay with him 24/7. There was a fold down bed next to his cot, I was provided hot drinks and meals. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, eventhough like everywhere they were shoft staffed and not enough beds for the patients.
We are lucky our boys werent in long. Some families are in there alot longer and have to visit on a regular basis. Not only do the staff look after the children, they are very supportive towards parents / family members too.
