So this is me and Beau as many of you know he is my first born handsome boy.
What some may not know is that me and Beau spent the first week he was born in hospital. Beau had multiple blood tests, lumbar punctures, and cannulas due to me carrying and passing on Group B strep.
For me being on the other side as a new mum and my child as a patient was so difficult especially since I am a paediatric nurse. When I am working these types of things are day to day jobs. We are strong and get on with it supporting the babies and their families. But being the other side when it’s your first baby is frightening and upsetting watching all that he went through at just hours old.
We tho are very lucky he is here to tell the tale. Lots of people don’t know anything about Group B Strep but with a simple test prior to giving birth you can be aware if your a carrier and reduce the risks of passing it on to your baby.
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months.
On average in the UK, at least
-two babies a day develop a group B Strep infection
-one baby a week dies from their GBS infection, and
-one baby a week survives with long-term disabilities – physical, mental or both.
Yet most group B Strep infections are preventable. Group B Strep Support informs families & health professionals about group B Strep to save tiny lives.
