Story
We are running the LLHM for the Sky Cardiac Ward/Cardiology Team at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital as a way to show our thanks for the incredible medical care that they gave our daughter Florence, for an extended period, in Summer 2021.
Here is the story of Our Little Superstar…
At 9 weeks old Flo was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease called Mixed Mitral Valve Disease, and since she was born she had been living in Heart Failure.
On Saturday 14th August 2021, we ended up in our local hospital as Flo hadn’t fed properly for 2 days. She was then blue light transferred to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and her diagnosis began to unravel. Flo had a very enlarged left side of her heart and a severe build up of fluid on her lungs - she was struggling to feed, breathing became hard work and she was very exhausted.
Flo spent nearly 6 weeks at the Evelina, with her ending up in intensive care at 13 weeks old (for 10 days) on a ventilator and with many medications to keep her alive. She finally had 6 hours of open heart surgery at 14 weeks old, so that the surgeons could replace the mitral valve in her heart - Flo is the smallest patient to ever have this surgery!
Flo will have many more trips to the Evelina in the years ahead for further surgeries to have the valve replaced as she grows. We couldn’t thank the nurses, doctors, surgeons and everyone at the Evelina enough for what they did for Our Little Superstar - they really are true heroes, and so we thought we will try to raise some money to give back for the care that Flo received.
