Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In December 2016, a few days before Christmas, we received the devastating news that David’s father had leukaemia and he was blue lighted to St. Barts hospital in London to start immediate treatment.
We were all, obviously, in total shock with Ray having been a healthy and active man, loving his time in the garden. It was especially upsetting as it was Quinton’s first Christmas and he was so looking forward to spending this special time with his grandson. I will never forget the two of them holding their hands up to each other through the glass of the hospital window to the ward, us having to keep Quinton away from him whilst he went through his treatment programme as children can harbour dangerous germs and infections for those who are immuno-compromised.
We all stayed positive for Ray and hoped that we would get to the stage where a bone marrow transplant could take place seeing him on the road to recovery but unfortunately after two rounds of intense chemotherapy we lost Ray on 4th July 2017. We all miss him very much every day and are determined for Quinton to know as much about his Grandad as possible.
Running the London marathon has long been on the bucket list for me and inspired by the buzz and others I knew running the 2018 marathon, I knew it was the right time to give it a go. So enthused, I’ve also convinced David to run so we’ll be training for the big day together. I’ll be running for Ray and for all those affected by cancer or who have lost loved ones.
Leukaemia was a difficult disease to understand even for those of us who like to think we’re well informed and it comes in many different forms. We all found getting advice and support very difficult at various stages from diagnosis to end of life and that is why we have chosen to support Leukameia Care as our charity.
Thank you so much for the support and encouragement we have received already. We’ve got this (?!).
