In memory of Stuart Shuttleworth
Royal Marines have one of the most physically and psychologically demanding jobs on the planet and findings show a lack of knowledge about mental health issues makes it more difficult to recognise a problem developing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My nephew Stuart Shuttleworth died on 23rd May 2019, Age 31.

During 2011 Stuart served with 42 Commando Royal Marines in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. During that tour, seven comrades from Stuart’s Company were killed, including Stuart’s best friend, Dean ‘Deano’ Mead, who was fatally injured by an improvised explosive device blast while conducting a cordon and search operation with Stuart. Operational requirements meant that the troop returned to the front line the following day.

Royal Marines have one of the most physically and psychology demanding jobs on earth and mental health issues often go undetected.  It is estimated that 7% of frontline troops develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and around 20% of service personnel are suffering with a mental health disorder at any one time, but few seek help.

I am supporting Project Regain, the mental health initiative run by the Royal Marines Charity to improve access to mental health services for serving and retired Royal Marines.

I am raising money by completing a tandem freefall parachute jump during early 2020 with Craig, Stuarts brother, who is a skydiving instructor and has completed more than 1000 jumps.

I know you will receive a lot of requests to make charitable donations, but I would be delighted if you could donate in memory of Stuart on my JustGiving page
