Story
Hi,
I'm Mark Jefferies, but best known as Jeffers, and this year I'm going to run the London Marathon for Macular Society.
The macula is part of the retina at the back of the eye. It is only about 5mm across but is responsible for all of our central vision, most of our colour vision and the fine detail of what we see.
The macula has a very high concentration of photoreceptor cells that detect light and send signals to the brain, which interprets them as images. Macular disease causes loss of central vision.
My beloved dad has been slowly losing his sight for the last few years due to macular disease, he is one of 1.5 million people in the UK affected.
Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK,with 300 people diagnosed every day. It steals your sight, your confidence, and your ability to do the things you love.
There is only one way to beat Macular Disease for good. We must fund much more research now, until we find a cure, or find treatments that stop it in its tracks. Any money I raise will help with this.
I appreciate some people reading this will have sponsored me when I ran the marathon for the first time in 2017 for a hospice in my home town, but if you are able to sponsor me again, however big or small a donation it would be really appreciated.
Thanks for reading this and also good luck to all the runners and all the charities involved in the London Marathon.
