As many of you will know my husband Tom, our family and I have been learning to cope with his diagnosis of vascular dementia for the past few years. On April 18th I will be ZIP LINING across the River Clyde to raise money & support Alzheimer Scotland in their efforts to make sure nobody faces dementia alone.
FUND RAISING:
I would love you to come join me, watch, donate or help fund raise so we can together make a nice donation to help Alzheimer Scotland.
OUR STORY:
Approximately 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 will have Alzheimer's disease; but no one ever thinks it will be them. Well, it's us!
Tom ("Dad, Uncle Tam, Pops, Grandad, TC, Top Cat, football team mate, golf partner, The man from the Pru, Postman..." however you know him) was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia a few years ago. Vascular dementia is a decline in thinking skills caused by conditions that block or reduce blood flow to various regions of the brain, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients. But in simple terms it results in the same condition / symptoms as Alzheimers.
It started with fairly easy to ignore occurrences like forgetfulness or lack of motor skills (those who saw him golf over the years might argue it started years ago!) but has progressed to today where he struggles to dress himself, can no longer do many of the tasks he loved around the house and garden and at times has difficulty forming sentences to communicate. He has also experienced a number of "mini strokes" in the past 12 months. In short, it is a brutal disease that impacts not only the individual but also his family and friends ability to lead "normal" lives.
There is no cure. Treatments will at best slow down progression. Organizations such as Alzheimer Scotland provide help, information and emotional support while campaigning for the rights of people with dementia and funding vital research.
For these reasons I have decided to be hoisted 150 feet in the air to zip line 1000 feet across the River Clyde! So if you want to help (or just want to see a flying Granny in April) please donate through the JustGiving page or consider joining me. Every little helps.
Thank you!
Jean
