Story
Derian House is a very special place. They provided support to our family at the very worst time of our lives when our beautiful boy Matthew passed away on 8th December 2000. With this in mind, and the fact that Matthew would have celebrated his 21st birthday this year we thought it would be a nice idea to choose 8th December to sponsor a nurse for a day. So we have pledged to raise £150 to sponsor a Derian nurse like Kathryn for a day - if you can spare a little to help us do this that would be amazing. Thank you.
Kathryn is a Derian House nurse. She says: People often ask how I can look after dying children. Well I am at peace with the idea that I cannot fix or cure every child, as much as I may like to, but what I can do is offer support, comfort and reassurance, and instill a sense of calm for a family in a world that feels like it is falling apart. I cant stop it from happening but I can make it the best it can be. When it comes to the moment where you are standing by a child in his or her final hours and minutes of life, I feel a huge sense of responsibility. I often stop and realise that the parents are going to think of this very moment for as long as they will remember. I truly love my job and, in the end, I aim to treat people how I would like to be treated. "
